Montreal announced on July 6, 2021 the withdrawal of its candidacy as host city of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be co-hosted by Canada, Mexico and the United States, after the withdrawal of the financial support from the Government of Quebec. This 2026 World Cup will be the very first edition of the competition with 48 teams.
