In the women’s singles sector, China secured a medal with Chen Yu Fei and He Bing Jiao meeting in the semifinals. One men’s doubles medal has also been secured by China by passing Li Jun Hui / Liu Yu Chen to the finals.
Although it has been absent for a year due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the Chinese team’s performance was extraordinary. Wang said that before leaving for Tokyo, the Chinese team held a simulated exercise conditioned to the atmosphere in Tokyo and he felt the benefits of the ‘Tokyo Replica’.
“Obviously we benefited a lot. It helped us to get used to the court in Tokyo, the time in Tokyo and the conditions in Tokyo. All this helped us to prepare to compete in this venue,” said Wang, as reported by the Badminton World Federation (BWF).
The cohesiveness of the team is also an encouragement for Wang/Huang in facing the tough Olympics.
“They are all outstanding, we are true to our goals. Before the game, our team-mates told us to believe in ourselves,” said Huang.
When asked if he had any inkling or thoughts about winning in the final, Huang limited himself to not thinking too much.
“When I want to sleep, I tell myself. Don’t think, don’t think, let’s go to sleep. The more you think, the more (too) excited you will be,”.
Wang/Huang’s victory adds to China’s long list of successes in winning the mixed doubles gold medal at the Olympics. Since mixed doubles was played in seven editions starting at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, China has collected four gold medals. Two golds were won by Korean representatives and one gold was obtained by Indonesian representatives, Tontowi Ahmad/Liliyana Natsir.
