Minjee Lee (64) wins her first Grand Slam

The Australian Minjee Lee won his first title in a ‘big’ tournament this Sunday by winning the Evian Championship and after beating the South Korean in a tiebreaker Jeongeun Lee6, who started the last day as an outstanding leader.

Minjee Lee, 25, had so far had five titles on the LPGA circuit, but he lacked a ‘major’. After having been third in the ANA Inspiration of 2017 and in the British Open of 2020, the Australian touched the sky this Sunday in Evian-Les-Bains (France).

Minjee Lee and Jeongeun Lee6 finished tied at 266 strokes (18 under par) after the four rounds, which forced them to play a ‘playoff’ on the 18th hole, in which the Australian controlled her nerves better: she made a birdie (4) , while his rival committed bogey (6).

Jeongeun Lee6 held the lead from day two, but Sunday’s 71 (even) allowed the rise of Minjee Lee, who completed the fourth round with her best card of the weekend, 64 (-7).

The South Korean, who was looking for her second major, made a 61 (-10) on Friday with which she equaled the lowest lap achieved in a ‘major’ tournament both for women and men.

The Perth player is the older sister of Min Woo Lee, who two weeks ago won the Scottish Open, her second win on the European Tour, where she debuted in February 2020 by winning the ISPS Handa Vic Open.

A hit by Minjee Lee and Jeongeun Lee6 finished the American Yealimi Noh; Three were made by the Japanese Ayaka Furue, and four, the Thai Atthaya Thitikul.
