Matteo Berrettini continues to break all records and to write the history of Italian tennis. The Roman tennis player in fact thanks to today’s victory over the Serbian Denis Shapovalov became the first Italian to reach a final of Wimbledon: a goal that only great champions can achieve.
As a boy, Berrettini practiced judo and swimming. He remained a huge NBA basketball fan and fan of LeBron James, the world basketball star that Nike has promised to involve as an influencer thus obtaining the sponsorship contract from 2020 with Liverpool.
Berrettini is craised in Rome, in the Prati Fiscali district, he studied at the Liceo Scientifico Archimede, however, giving the final exam as a private student. The family then moved to another area of the capital, to Parioli. Berrettini began attending the Aniene Rowing Club, with which he also plays in the Serie A of tennis.
The club, chaired from 1997 to 2017 by Giovanni Malagò, has over 120 years of history. He provided the national team with four medalists in rowing at the 1932 Olympics and participated in the first Italian 5-a-side football championship.
However, Berrettini does not support either Roma or Lazio. Berrettini he inherited from his grandfather Piero the passion for Fiorentina.
Berrettini and Fiorentina, a family passion
Matteo’s grandfather Berrettini, Piero, began working as a zonist at Olivetti di Fiesole. He then made a career in another company, Standa, even occupying managerial roles that led him to travel to settle in Rome.
Piero Berrettini lived as a fan the golden years of Fulvio’s first purple championship Bernardini, a technician always ahead of his time who arrived on the Fiorentina bench in 1953. Yet the Marquis Luigi Ridolfi, patron of the team, does not consider him his first choice and in fact probes Vittorio Pozzo and some English managers.
Berrettini, the grandfather fan and Fiorentina’s first Scudetto
From 1954, Bernardini’s personal vision of WM emerges, the so-called system in vogue in those years. For mid-season the Fiorentina contends for the top positions in the standingsInter and to Juventus, but drops to the distance. However, with Costagliola, Magnini, Cervato, Chiappella, Rosetta, Segato and Gratton, the Viola ended with the best defense of the championship. Thus, the technician thinks about enhancing the attack.
Dall’Udinese Giuseppe Virgili arrives, for everyone Pecos Bill, and in the summer of 1955 Julio Botelho, known as “Julinho”, arrives from Brazil: a right wing that will do wonders. With the other wildcard Miguel Angel Montuori, captain Rosetta as a modern free and Maurilio Prini as tactical winger, Fiorentina lost only one game on the last day, but they have already won the Scudetto. It is the first to break the domination of the big northerners and in the 1956-57 championship becomes the first Italian team in the final of Champions Cup. In front, however, there is the unbeatable Real Madrid of Gento, Di Stefano and Kopa, who wins 2-0.
That epic is enough to conquer grandfather Piero and to transfer the purple pride to the whole Berrettini family.
