Lucas Herbert wins Irish Open and qualifies for British Open

He was the strongest this week at Mount Juliet Estate. Australian Lucas Herbert, 25, is running for his second trophy on the tour, following his January 2020 victory at the Omega Dubai Desert Classic. Leader since Thursday, Herbert started his last day perfectly with two birdies at 2 and 3. Joined at -17 by Johannes Veerman, his game mate, Herbert hit the nail on the head with two birdies at 15 and 17, while his rival lost a point at 16 after a failed bunker exit.

Veerman had been in contact with the leader for a long time, gradually reducing the margin before joining him at -17 by hitting a perfect putt on the par 3 of 14. A short tie as Herbert took the lead on the next hole. Veerman then let loose, on 16 first, where he saw his bunker exit cross the green, then on 18, an approach left short followed by two putts for the bogey, final -15.

Bogey synonymous with 3rd place in the final for Veerman, since the Swede Rikard Karlberg comes into the line thanks to three birdies on the last four holes. A perfectly negotiated chip on the last hole allows the Swede to finish at -16 overall, one stroke in front of Veerman. Karlberg, Lucas Herbert and Johannes Veerman all secure their places in the field of the British Open, July 15-18 at Royal Saint George’s.

In Ireland, the first Habs is Antoine Rozner. A -7 final, the Racingmen returned a card of +2 this Sunday, insufficient to claim better than a 33rd place. Behind, we find Julien Guerrier and Grégory Havret, 51st to -4. Benjamin Hebert took 59th place at -2, alone with McIlroy. Alexander Levy finished in the par total, 65th, and Raphaël Jacquelin 68th at +5.
