L’Expression: Sports – Departure of the first contingent for Tokyo

Two other departures, from Algiers, will be on the program on July 23 and 26, says the Algerian Olympic Committee.

The first contingent of Algerian athletes, qualified for the Tokyo-2020 Olympic Games, postponed to 2021 (July 23 – August 8), flew to the Japanese capital yesterday in the afternoon, announced the Olympic Committee. Algerian sportsman (COA). 12 athletes, representing six disciplines: Rowing, Judo, Table tennis, Fencing, Shooting, and Sailing, left the country yesterday afternoon. Two other departures, from Algiers, will be on the program on July 23 and 26, specifies the same source. 44 athletes from 14 disciplines will represent Algeria at the 2020 Olympics. Taoufik Makhloufi, Olympic champion in the 1500m at the London 2012 Olympics and double silver medalist (800.1500m) at the Rio 2016 Olympics, will be the leader of the Algerian sports delegation. The disciplines of athletics, boxing and wrestling, with eight athletes each, are the most representative. Next come fencing with 4 athletes, swimming (3), rowing (2), cycling (2), judo (2) and sailing (2). The rest of the Algerian contingent is represented by canoeing (1 athlete), weightlifting (1), karate (1), table tennis (1) and sport shooting (1). As a reminder, Algeria took part in the Rio-2016 Olympics with a delegation of 46 athletes, plus the selection of U-23 football (18 players).
