Laufer Wölfe with a split with the Schwaig Red Lions

Victory and defeat for the Bayernliga baseball players of TV1877

SCHWAIG, July 10th, 2021 – With a perfect record of 6 wins from 6 games behind us, we went south to the Schwaig Red Lions last Saturday. The Lions had not played a game so far this season and so the strength of the opponent was unknown. Again, the staffing was quite thin due to injuries and private commitments, but two players from the second team made the reassuring replacement on the bench.

A close match with few hits

Within sight of Munich Airport, the wolves first hit the bar in their first game, as is customary away from home. Eight balls, ie throws outside the strike zone, by the Schwaiger pitcher led to two free runs on first base (“walks”) right at the start. Immediately stolen bases put runners on two and three without a break. But the runners missed this great opportunity and two strikeouts, as well as a simple groundout for the shortstop, ended the inning without points. As usual, Johannes Baßfeld started on the throwing hill and fired his pitches to catcher Matthias Weydenhammer behind the plate. A mistake by the Laufer defense in the first play of the day had no consequences as the Laufer pitcher sent the next three Lions batsmen back to the bench with a strikeout. In the second inning, the first run for Haberloher, but without having achieved a successful hit. Again two walks, a stolen base and a wild pitch (“Wild Pitch”) brought Shaun Dehler home for the first point. However, three strikeouts prevented a higher footleadership. The Schwaiger could Indeed equalize immediately and so it remained a close match that was dominated by pitching. With only a few hits again, all singles, but numerous walks and wild pitches, the runners were able to take a 4-1 lead in the middle of the fifth inning. Matthias Weydenhammer took over for Baßfeld on the thrower’s hill in the sixth inning, who was unable to continue throwing due to an injury to his hand. He now had to try to keep the narrow lead for a little more than an inning. To everyone’s relief, he did an excellent job. He did not allow another run and was able to secure the Wolves victory in the first game with a “save”, despite at best an average performance on the loft.

Hitting too weak in the second game too

Anyone who had thought that this close first win would bring the necessary security in the field and then finally also the required punch for game 2 was mistaken. While the runners in the pits were still not very successful, the Red Lions were able to adapt well to pitcher Dominik Leipold right from the start. The first 5 batter hit base and so the wolves were quickly behind with 0: 5. A similar picture in the second inning: handicapped by a muscle injury by Philipp Weydenhammer, three of the hosts opposed a run of the runners and when the score was 1: 8, the 77ers switched to Matthias Weydenhammer as thrower again. The game was now more balanced, but the runners were no longer able to initiate a turnaround. In the end stood with 2:10 the first loss of the season. Again, the hit was too weak throughout the lineup and only 4 hits are not enough to win. In particular, if the defense also wobbles and supports the opponent with weak and sometimes unnecessary throws (4 errors).

Playing for the run: Felix Arnold (RF), Johannes Baßfeld (pitcher / 1st), Shaun Dehler (1st / 2nd), Fabian (C / LF), Jannis (SS) and Jürgen Harenz (CF), Dominik Leipold (P / CF) ), Riccardo Mies (3rd), Matthias (P / C / CF / LF) and Philipp Weydenhammer (C / SS / 2nd / LF).

This defeat has to be ticked off quickly, because of course the balance of 7: 1 and 1st place in the Bayernliga Nord is impressive. However, the aim must be to show a better performance, especially on the loft, and to act more concentrated in the field. The next opportunity is there am 25.7. in the away game against the Guggenberg Legionnaires 3 in Regensburg.
