Karate for the first time at the Olympics
Karate will take place at the Olympic Games for the first time this year. The special feature: The martial arts comes from Japan and thus has its home premiere. Athletes can compete in two disciplines. We clarify the most important questions about the new Olympic martial arts.
How many gold medals are there in karate?
Gold can be won a total of eight times in Tokyo. Twice in the Kata discipline and six times in the Kumite discipline.
What are the different disciplines?
In the kata discipline, the athlete is alone on the mat. He demonstrates various attack and defense techniques without a direct opponent. Several judges then decide on the technical execution with regard to speed, rhythm, strength and expression.
It looks completely different with the Kumite. Here two athletes fight against each other on large mats. The athletes are allowed to attack certain areas of the body with punches and kicks. Here, too, judges decide on successful hits. The kumite fights last three minutes. However, if you have eight points more than your opponent, you have won early.
Weight classes:
There are different weight classes in the Kumite discipline:
Men: up to 67 kg, up to 75 kg, from 75 kg
Women: up to 55 kg, up to 61 kg, from 61 kg
When does karate take place at the Olympic Games?
The martial arts karate takes place from August 5th to August 7th.
Thursday 5th August: 15 competitions (7 medal decisions)
Friday August 6th: 15 competitions (7 medal decisions)
Saturday August 7th: 10 competitions (6 medal decisions)

Where do the competitions take place?
Karate and other traditional Japanese martial arts are played in Nippon Budōkan, the center of Japanese martial arts. Judo martial arts celebrated its Olympic premiere in the halls in 1964.
