Joachim Gérard takes revenge on Reid and wins his 2nd Grand Slam

Joachim Gerard (ITF 4) won the final at Wimbledon in the wheelchair event for the first time in his career. The Belgian won against Gordon Reid (ITF 6) in two sets 6-2 / 7-6 and therefore takes revenge on the Englishman.

If the first set was pocketed easily, the second was harder. While leading 4-1, Joachim Gérard saw his opponent first come back to 4-4 and erase the two late breaks. Joachim took a break again and served for the match, but the Englishman once again hung on to come back to 5-5. The second set was finally played in the tie-break and in this little game, it was Joachim who won.

What is also good is the number of spectators who are here. A few years ago there was no one there and today you are all here. Thank you.

I love this tournament so much. I gave the best of myself. I’m happy to be here and thank my team for being here. Without them, I will never be here. I will have lost in the first round. What is also good is the number of spectators who are here. A few years ago there was no one there and today you are all here. Thank you. I know I have a lot of supports. Without the Covid-19, there would be more people to come and support me. I hope I still have victories like this“said Joachim after his victory.

The weekend is ending much better than it had started. Because the Belgian, in the company of Tom Egberink lost in the doubles final on Saturday against the same Gordon Reid associated with Alfie Hewett. With this victory, Joachim Gérard won his second Grand Slam tournament in four finals, after the Australian Open in January.

After Elise Mertens in doubles, Belgium is putting its name on the tournament list for the second time this year.
