Eriksen a Role Model for Damsgaard

Copenhagen

Danish young star, Mikkel Damsgaard, admitted that his playing style was inspired by Christian Eriksen. His presence in the Dynamite Team was able to cover Eriksen’s absence.

Denmark started Euro 2020 with tragedy. They lost 0-1 to Finland in the opening match of Group B with the sad story of Christian Eriksen’s collapse on the pitch at the end of the first half due to a heart attack.

Eriksen’s condition then slowly improved after undergoing surgery at the hospital. However, playmaker Denmark is certain to not be able to complete Euro 2020.

Without Eriksen, Denmark is increasingly in a difficult situation after losing 1-2 to Belgium in the second match. On the verge of not qualifying, a miracle came for Denmark after a 4-1 win over Russia in the last match of Group B.

Denmark qualified for the last 16 as runners up in Group B after winning head to head on aggregate goals over Russia and Finland who both collected 3 points. Denmark’s surprise continued in the last 16 with their convincing 4-0 win over Wales.

The dynamite team explosion also called for the name of a young star, namely Mikkel Damsgaard. The absence of Eriksen made Danish coach Kasper Hjulmand change the formation from 4-2-3-1 to 3-3-2-1.

This accommodates Damsgaard’s ability to play behind the main striker. Damsgaard has scored 1 goal and 1 assist. He is also listed as the Danish player with the best cross percentage with 55.7 percent.

Damsgaard deserves to be proud that his presence can cover Eriksen’s absence. The reason is, Eriksen is the figure who inspired the style of playing this Sampdoria pillar.

“I can say that he inspired me. Eriksen is one of the players I want to emulate the most,” Damsgaard was quoted as saying by Football Italia.

“I admired him a lot when I was young, and since then, I’ve always played as a number 10, like he did, so it’s hard not to admire him.

“I studied a lot of details of his game and how he found space. I’ve been trying to include that in my game since I was a kid. Then it was crazy to be with him in the national team and see how he trains,” he explained.

Damsgaard with Denmark is determined to continue the surprise in the quarterfinals. In this phase, they will meet the Czech Republic.
