England lose on penalties, Lampard and Shearer critique Rashford

LONDON, KOMPAS.com – The penalty technique of the England national team star, Marcus Rashford, in the Euro 2020 final match against the Italian national team was in the spotlight.

The Euro 2020 final match between Italy vs England was held at Wembley Stadium, London, England, on Monday (12/7/2021) early morning WIB.

The winner of the Italy vs England match had to be decided on penalties after the 1-1 draw lasted until extra time.

In the penalty shootout, the three executioners of the England national team, namely Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho, and Bukayo Saka, failed to fulfill their duties.

On the other hand, there were only two executioners of the Italian national team who failed, namely Andrea Bellotti and Jorginho.

The Three Lions, the nickname of the England national team, ultimately failed to lift the Euro 2020 championship trophy after losing 2-3 to Italy on penalties.

After the match, two England national team legends, Frank Lampard and Alan Shearer, compactly criticized Marcus Rashford’s penalty technique.

Broadly speaking, the order of execution of Rashford’s penalty is running with wide steps, jogging on tiptoe while looking at Gianluigi Donnarrumma (Italian goalkeeper), and kicking with the inside right foot.

Rashford was actually able to outwit Donnaruma. Rashford’s shot goes to the left of the goal, while Donnarumma moves to the right.

However, Rashford had bad luck as his right-footed shot hit the post.

According to Lampard, Rashford should not have used the jog on his tiptoe technique to execute a penalty in a match as big as the Euro 2020 final.

Because the technique is too risky. Lampard thinks Rashford should have kicked harder to increase the chances of a goal.

“I’ve never shot a penalty with a technique like Rashford. I and probably many other executioners will not change the style of his penalty,” said Lampard quoted from the Metro site.

“In training, maybe the penalty technique with jogging on tiptoe while waiting is easier to do. Because you don’t face crowd pressure,” said Lampard.

“However, that technique will be difficult to do in a game as big as the Euro 2020 final which is full of pressure,” the Chelsea legend added.

Almost the same criticism was also conveyed by the Premier League’s all-time top scorer, Alan Shearer.

However, Shearer had no problem with the toe jogging technique used by Rashford.

Shearer only regretted Rashford’s shot being too weak.

Apart from that, Shearer did not want to blame Rashford or Sancho and Saka for missing a penalty.

Shearer actually praised the trio for daring to advance to become England’s penalty takers despite their young age.

“You could see Rashford wasn’t looking at the ball when he squared off. He chose to look at Donnarumma,” said Shearer.

“Rashford has seen where Donnarumma will move. However, Rashford’s execution is too weak. He has polished the ball too much,” said Shearer.

“You can’t criticize anyone who has dared to run for penalties in a game of this magnitude,” said Shearer.

“You have to give credit for their bravery,” the Newcastle United legend added.
