EM semifinals in London: 57,811 fans in the corona pandemic

WITHThousands of fans celebrated their EM semi-finalists on Tuesday at Wembley Stadium. A total of 57,811 spectators followed the high-class game between Spain and Italy in the evening. To a large extent, they were supporters of the two national teams: supporters of the Squadra Azzurra cheered, sang and celebrated behind one goal, and those of the Spanish team behind the other. Although mask and distance rules officially applied in the stadium, the pictures and videos still showed scenes like before the corona pandemic.

Well before kick-off, hundreds of fans in front of the stadium were in the mood for the first semifinals. According to official figures, 11,000 fans from the Italians and 9,000 from the Spanish team were expected. Because of the strict Corona rules, which require a quarantine for travelers from several countries, there should only be a few fans from Italy and Spain themselves. The Spanish association asked Spaniards living in Great Britain for support on Monday. “We need you,” tweeted the association.

Also in the second semi-final between hosts England and Denmark on Wednesday (9 p.m. in the FAZ live ticker for the European Football Championship, on ZDF and on MagentaTV) and the final on Sunday, around 60,000 spectators will be allowed into the stadium, which corresponds to around 75 percent of the total capacity. The decision to increase fits in with the British Corona strategy.

By July 19, the corona measures such as minimum distances and mask requirements are to be largely lifted. Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced this on Monday. Then the English can sit in the packed theater again, celebrate huge parties and even dance the night away in a packed club. Like in the semi-finals on Tuesday.
