Hughes thanked him too

What happened? After Germany’s eighth-final defeat by Germany against England, the television and stadium screens showed the girl crying and clinging to her father. The picture was then shared on social media, some with insulting and aggressive comments with references to the Second World War. Many Britons had condemned it sharply, including former English footballer Gary Lineker and Stan Collymore.

Hughes then started the crowdfunding campaign to show the girl that not all people in Great Britain are “terrible”. Originally, the 51-year-old businessman had set out to target £ 500. By Wednesday noon, 3,248 people had donated over 36,000 pounds (about 42,000 euros). Hughes had hoped to use social media to find out who the girl and her family were so that he could get them the money. This has now been achieved. Hughes also thanked everyone involved on the website.
