The CDU Bundestag candidate Hans-Georg Maaßen sharply criticized the media in Germany in a television interview. He focused on the public broadcasters and especially the ARD. He requested a character test for journalists from the ARD “Tagesschau” on the “TV Berlin” channel – and thus triggered sharp criticism.
“The North German Broadcasting Corporation is responsible for the ‘Tageschau'”, said the former President of the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution. “If you can see that there are also connections between the ‘Tagesschau’ or between people who work for public broadcasting and the ‘Tagesschau’ and the left and extreme left scene, then that would really be worth investigating,” said Maassen. He did not give any specific examples or allegations.

Maaßen, who is running for the CDU in constituency 196 in southern Thuringia, is controversial because of his stance on the federal government’s refugee policy, among other things. Politicians from the SPD, the Greens and the Left have repeatedly accused the CDU of fishing with measures on the right.
In the interview, the CDU politician further demanded “that the biography of some editors should also be put to the test to see whether these people have the character traits that accompany the ‘Tagesschau’ through editorial work”.
Maaßen accused the public service broadcaster of a “clear left twist”. You can read that more than 90 percent of the ARD volunteers sympathized with links, red or green or red-green. In addition, more than 70 percent of journalists have a tendency to be left and green. It remained unclear here whether Maassen was referring to ARD only or to all journalists.
ARD does not deal directly with measures
ARD did not want to respond directly to Maassen’s accusation that journalists from the “Tageschau” had connections to the left or left-wing extremist scene, or to his request for a review of the ARD staff. At the request of the Tagesspiegel, Barbara Jung, as the press spokeswoman for the North German Broadcasting Corporation (NDR) currently responsible for ARD, only said: “The Tagesschau has high demands on objectivity and diligence in reporting. When selecting news, she strictly follows journalistic criteria. The Tagesschau thus stands for balanced, comprehensible and fact-based journalism ”.
Frank Überall, the federal chairman of the German Association of Journalists (DJV), had already spoken out on the Maaßen cause on Saturday. “Journalists with“ connections to the left-wing extremist scene ”in the @ tagesschau editorial team? What behaviorally original statements, Mr. @HGMaassen! Or do you have proof of this? @DJVde “wrote everywhere via Twitter.
Maaßen: manipulation of published opinion
There is a “manipulation of published opinion” in political reporting, Maaßen said. He no longer sees balanced reporting there. The State Treaty prescribes balanced reporting for public broadcasters. But there is a lack of sanction options such as fines or criminal proceedings.
In public broadcasting one can “ignore all regulations, it does not result in any sanctions”. And no one among the professional politicians wants to mess with the broadcasters for fear of getting into the focus, said Maaßen.
Maaßen stated that during talks during the election campaign in southern Thuringia, he was told that citizens were “afraid to express their opinions freely and openly”. In addition, people would have the impression that they no longer found in the media what they experienced and what represents their everyday life. A “gap between the media public and reality” would be perceived.
He believes that in southern Thuringia one has “a special sensorium (…) for undesirable political developments when one realizes that certain facts are no longer even being portrayed in the media”. That drives the people. “That, for example, the nationality of perpetrators can no longer be found in the newspapers or is often left out. That people lie around, even when it comes to migrant crimes (…) ”, said Maaßen.
Maassen speaks of bold lies and tricks
He then gives an example from Iserlohn, where it was allegedly not reported that an arrested alleged assassin was a migrant from an asylum shelter there, but rather an “Iserlohner”. “I have to say that this is manipulation of opinions,” said Maaßen.
Maaßen speaks of media tricks that “didn’t exist ten or 15 years ago”. There are “bold lies, the manipulation of facts in the media”. An attempt is made to leave out certain information, certain messages are placed on the back, others in front, or an attempt is made to cover up others with certain messages so that they are not discussed at all.
Maaßen criticizes supervisory authorities
“These are the techniques that public service broadcasting uses today,” claims Maaßen. “I think it is extremely reprehensible and I consider it a shame that the supervisory authorities do not really correct this public service broadcasting system in this regard and ensure that something like this no longer takes place.”
Maassen’s statements immediately sparked sharp contradictions. “Our Basic Law protects the freedom of the press,” tweeted the Greens federal manager Michael Kellner. Maassen attacked them blatantly. “Here we need a clear demarcation of the Union,” demanded the politician.
Greens see a frontal attack on freedom of the press
Green politician Konstantin von Notz wrote of a “frontal attack on freedom of the press by a CDU candidate”. CDU boss Armin Laschet and CDU general secretary Paul Ziemiak couldn’t help the fact that Maaßen was set up in Thuringia, “but they can help that they are silent about these atrocities”.
The vice-chairman of the SPD parliamentary group, Katja Mast, suggested that Maaßen agree to the AfD’s tenor. This is “shabby and dangerous”. SPD general secretary Lars Klingbeil linked a critical tweet with the tv.berlin video on Twitter and wrote with a view to the CDU boss and candidate for chancellor: “And Armin Laschet is silent.” The former left-wing chairman Bernd Riexinger said that Maassen does not belong in the Bundestag.
Michael Windisch, head of political communication, digitization and fundamental issues of the CDU in the Thuringian state parliament, distanced himself from Maassen’s statements. “Mr. @HGMaassen represents his own point of view,” he tweeted. Dirk Toepffer, parliamentary group leader of the CDU in the Lower Saxony state parliament, sharply criticized the statements of the former President of the Office for the Protection of the Constitution and called on Maassen to leave the party.
At the end of April, Maassen was elected as a direct candidate by several district associations in southern Thuringia. His nomination also sparked sharp criticism in the CDU.
“To the 37 party colleagues in southern Thuringia: You really didn’t hear the bang! How can you be so crazy and just throw Christian democratic values overboard? ”Wrote the North Rhine-Westphalian State Secretary for Integration and CDU politician Serap Guler. “Anyone who is so afraid of the AfD has long since given up so much. A bitter day. ”At that time, CDU General Secretary Paul Ziemiak demanded from Maassen a“ clear commitment to the values and politics of the CDU as well as a sharp demarcation from the AfD ”.
The German citizens assess the situation of the media in Germany completely differently than Maassen. This was shown at the end of last year by the long-term study “Media Trust” by Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz.
According to this, 56 percent of those surveyed said that the media could be trusted when it came to important issues such as environmental problems, health hazards, political scandals and crises. In 2015 this value was still 28 percent. Trust in public service broadcasting was the highest at 70 percent, followed by regional newspapers, which around two thirds of Germans trust. (with say)
