Mexico City.- Canadian Milos Raonic, number 22 in the ATP ranking, received an invitation to the Los Cabos Mexican Tennis Open, tournament director Geoffrey Fernández reported this Friday.
“We are very pleased to share that we will award a WC for Milos Raonic at the Los Cabos Open,” said the manager on his official Twitter account.
Raonic, a finalist at Wimbledon in 2016, will be the second best placed in the Los Cabos resort tournament, behind the Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov, number 21 on the ATP list.
The Canadian will seek to win his first title at the Los Cabos Open, an ATP 250 tournament that opened in 2016 when Croatian Ivo Karlovic won the final against Spanish Feliciano López, after which American Sam Querrey was crowned in 2017; the Italian Fabio Fognini, in 2018; and the Argentine Diego Schwartzman, in 2019.
The Los Cabos Open could not be played in 2020 due to the covid-19 pandemic, so the 2021 edition will mark the return to activity with a prize pool of $ 598,545.
The fifth edition of the contest will have other players ranked among the 50 best in the world: the American John Isner, number 33; the British Cameron Norrie (34), the American Taylor Fritz (40), the Frenchman Adrian Mannarino (41) and the American Sebastian Korda (50).
The confirmed Latin Americans are the Argentine Guido Pella, 59 in the ATP ranking, and the Colombian Daniel Galán, ranked 112.
The Mexican tournament will take place from July 19 to 24 without an audience in the stands and in the new edition it will have a new venue, El Cabo Sports Complex, which boasts a stadium with capacity for 3,500 spectators.
The tournament will be held prior to the ATP 500 in Washington and the 1,000 Masters in Toronto and Cincinnati, which serves as a preparation for the players who will participate in the tour prior to the last Grand Slam of the year, the United States Open, on May 30. August to September 12.
