BRUNO CONTI, THE CHAMPION OF EVERYONE
Bruno Conti he was everyone’s champion: sure of Roma, with whom he played 16 seasons (the last 12 consecutive) guaranteeing 402 appearances and becoming one of the heroes of the 1983 championship, the second in the history of the club. Of all, because he is one of those players who, like Roberto Baggio, was able to overcome the barriers of teams and colors to fit into the collective imagination as a symbol of winning Italy. It is no coincidence that Bruno Conti, who played 47 games in the national team, was perhaps the best player of the 1982 World Cup: with his raids on the wing he inspired the goals of the late Paolo Rossi, maddened the defenses of Argentina, Brazil, Poland and West Germany, destining us to eternal glory.
Conti was a phenomenon, without half measures: far too little celebrated for his greatness on the pitch. He seemed destined for baseball, so much so that he went to the United States to really try it; Inter rejected him at an audition because they considered him too low, the rest is history with the passage – twice – to Genoa in Serie B to gain experience, and the great relationship he had with Nils Liedholm, which he found in Rome and with which he also won five Italian Cups. He has been a member of the Italian football Hall of Fame since 2017.
BRUNO CONTI, THE CURIOSITIES
Among the curiosities about Bruno Conti we can mention his great career as a manager, and in charge of youth teams of Roma: many players who emerged in the Giallorossi nursery are also due to him, for which today he takes care of the teams from the Under 11 to the Under 16. He also coached the first team of Rome in 2005, taking them to the final of the Italian Cup (7 points in 10 league games), Roma has inextricably linked his name. The two sons were footballers: Andrea did not have a brilliant career, Daniele after the brief yellow and red experience he played 16 seasons for 464 matches with Cagliari, of which he became captain and today he is Technical Director. Bruno Conti’s nephew is called after him, and he is Daniele’s son: he plays in the Cagliari Primavera as a central midfielder, he is a 2002 that in 2020-2021 closed the season with 32 appearances and 3 goals, also playing a good portion of the championship with the Under 17 team. Therefore, the Conti family also thrives on football: we may not yet be at the level of the Maldini, but certainly Bruno Conti was one of the most extraordinary symbols of our movement, and who knows that his nephew could retrace one day his footsteps. Maybe in Rome, from where his son Daniele left without being able to break through, also because that family inheritance was very heavy to carry.
