A British football fan has started a donation campaign on the Internet for a little German girl who is at Germany’s 2-0 defeat by England had cried at Wembley Stadium and was then aggressively insulted on the Internet by alleged England fans.

Joel Hughes from Wales told the BBC that he wanted to please her and show that not all people in Great Britain are “terrible”.

After the game, the crying girl was shown on TV and on stadium screens.

Many English fans then cheered. Subsequently, the picture of the girl went viral on the Internet.

It was shared on social media with sometimes very insulting and aggressive comments with references to the Second World War.

Many Britons had condemned it sharply, including former English footballers Gary Lineker and Stan Collymore. “I saw the game. I saw a bit of the negative mood, you could hear the booing and stuff,” said Hughes in the BBC interview.

“But when I saw this hideous abuse of the pictures of this little girl, I thought: I’ve had enough!” Hughes said he has no plans to change the world. “If we can make the girl smile or make the parents understand that there are still good things in the UK, then at least we did one thing right.”

Originally, Hughes had spent £ 500 as the target of the crowdfunding campaign. By Friday noon, over 10,000 pounds (approx. 11,600 euros) had already been collected.

Initiator Hughes said he hoped to get in touch with the girl’s family. If that doesn’t work, or if the family doesn’t want it, he will donate the money to a charitable organization in line with the cause. (dpa / thp)
