Euro de football 2020 (and 2021)dossier

Hangover for the English, triumph for the Italians. Victorious of Euro 2021 after a penalty shootout (1-1 to 3 tab to 2), the Italian team is celebrated this morning by the national press.

The Italian fans celebrated their team’s victory much of the night, they are unlikely to fall out of their clouds reading the newspapers on Monday. The transalpine press gives pride of place to the new European football champions, victorious against England who played the final at home, at Wembley. For the print and the messenger, it was so obvious, that the two newspapers chose the same title. “We are Europe”, headlined the two dailies in unison.

“It’s so beautiful, Italy is European champion”, rejoices on his side in one the Gazzetta dello Sport. “Italy is the queen of Europe, they deserved to win, they were able to react in a match that seemed lost, as only the big teams know how to do. Wembley shut up after whistling [l’hymne italien], shouted and shouted [les joueurs]», notes the sports daily in its editorial.

“Every Italian has felt like a giant again during these two hours”, can we also read. Words, which reflect the sporting feat accomplished by Italy, a team that has been reborn after the humiliation of not qualifying for the World Cup in Russia. A strong message also sent to the Italian people, who were hit hard during the first wave of Covid-19.

“Football has come home”

“She is ours”, adds the Corriere dello Sport on its one. The newspaper does not forget to chamber the English fans and their iconic song “It’s coming home”. “Football has come home! At our house ”, jubilant, teasing, the sporting daily.

The Italian media celebration contrasts with the sadness displayed by the British newspapers, which however celebrate the“heroism” of the England team. The latter, caught by “The curse of penalties”, leaves again a competition empty-handed, their last coronation dating from the 1966 World Cup. Gareth Southgate’s players had yet opened the scoring very early in the match, before Italy equalized in the second half. On the outskirts of the legendary Wembley Stadium, where the final was being played, the English fans believed in it. They, who, already tipsy before the kickoff of the match for some, had started to party. “So close”, sorry Guardian.
