European Football Championship 2021
After Racial Insults: Children write heartbreaking letters to England’s Rashford
The English footballer Marcus Rashford was insulted in the worst way racist after his missed penalty in the European Championship final. However, his fans – especially the youngest among them – stand by him.
England international Marcus Rashford suffered a host of racist insults after his missed penalty in the European Championship final. The 23-year-old attacker had only shot at the post when he tried to beat England (2: 3 after penalties) in the final of the European Football Championship. Subsequently, like his teammates Bukayo Saka and Jadon Sancho, who had also not met, he was racially insulted on the Internet.
“Great Man”
But in addition to all the ugly insults, Rashford also received a lot of encouragement, comfort and support, as he showed in his latest Twitter postings. Many true fans, including numerous children, sent him letters and emails to show him that the racists are not in the majority.
“I hope you won’t be sad for too long because you are such a great person,” wrote nine-year-old Dexter, for example. “Last year you inspired me to help people in need. You taught me to be more courageous.” In the Corona crisis, Rashford campaigned, among other things, to ensure that schoolchildren continue to receive school meals so that poorer families are not disadvantaged. “I am proud of you. You will always be a hero” can also be read in the postings.

A six-year-old from Newcastle gives Rashford a tip: “Don’t listen to those stupid knockers.” And referring to the non-won European Championship trophy, he added: “I have mine for you (Pokal, d. Red.) sent along to make you happy again. “

“I’m Marcus Rashford, 23 years old, a black man from Withington and Wythenshawe”
Rashford himself wrote in response to the support after the European Championship final day: “The people who always put their arms around me keep me upright now. I’m Marcus Rashford, 23 years old, a black man from Withington and Wythenshawe, South Manchester. If I have nothing else, I still have this. “
He promptly received the first support postings. The English national team’s Twitter account replied, “Keep inspiring. Keep making a difference. We’re extremely proud of you.” Manchester City Club wrote: “All of Manchester and all of England are proud of you, Marcus.”
