Next week, for the first time on a show, Major League Baseball fans can see a game where they may not hear a man’s voice. Five women will be in the air roster for the Baltimore Orioles vs. St. Petersburg Tampa Bay Rays.
Melanie Newman, last year’s Orioles radio host, will set the action for the game, which is the MLB game of the week live on YouTube. Sarah Langs, a popular baseball analyst and writer for MLB.com, will be the analyst on the booth. Alanna Rizzo will do field coverage and Heidi Watney and Lauren GardnEr will host the pre- and post-game shows.
“It can’t help but feel different,” said Rizzo in a telephone interview. “I’ve always had a male play-by-play voice in my ear every game I’ve played. Making a game where those voices are Melanie and Sarah is going to be a unique feel and perspective on the game … It’s exciting to be part of something like that. ”
Women have broadcast baseball games on the radio and television for decades, but this is believed to be the first time the “all girls” team has completely broadcast a major league game.
Last year, two NHL games were broadcast in the US and Canada, with all teams doing broadcast and production. The shows were with female presenters, producers, directors and cameramen. Even the technicians in the production trucks were women.mes.

Rizzo was entering Colorado high school in 1993 when his accounting teacher brought a television into the classroom so they could watch the first Rockies game. Later that year, Gayle Gardner became the first woman to air a televised game between the Colorado and Cincinnati Reds.

“The first female day is something that happened in my career,” Newman said, “and it’s something that I recognize as very important. But we also want to make sure that while we get all of these premieres, we won’t be the last either. “
Newman, who grew up in Georgia, heard Jim Fyffe on Auburn’s football radio broadcasts and called the mMinor League Baseball plays on the radio for six years and was part of the first all-female broadcast of a minor league game alongside Suzie Cool for a Salem Red Sox Game in 2019. Newman, Rizzo and Langs all named Waldman as their role model and found that their success made life easier for them all and for others. Langs, who previously worked as an onscreen analyst for two MLB games, grew up in New York and heard Waldman on the show.
Langs knows that little girls can tune in on Tuesdays to see and hear; to be an all-women team of broadcasters talking and sharing their baseball expertise.
“If hearing and seeing us inspires another girl, another young woman, to play sports,” said Langs: “I will feel that a mission has been fulfilled.”
