According to Foreign News 18 (NEWS18) on the 19th, Tegla Loroup, the leader of the refugee team at the Tokyo Olympic Games, recently tested positive for COVID-19.

Due to this confirmed case, the refugee team’s entry into Japan took place on the 18th, later than planned. The refugee team went to Tokyo after carrying out the final quenching in Doha, Qatar, for two days from the 11th.

The Tokyo Olympic refugee team consisted of 29 athletes from 11 countries. Participating events include 12 sports, including track and field, badminton, boxing, cycling, taekwondo, shooting, swimming, and weightlifting.

The team includes Kimi Alizadeh, 23, from Iran, who won a bronze medal in the women’s taekwondo 57kg class at the 2016 Rio Olympics in Brazil.

Yusra Mardini, 23, a swimmer from Ria, will also compete in the Tokyo Olympics as a refugee team representative for the second time after Rio.

Meanwhile, the refugee team was formed for the first time during the Rio Olympics. At that time, 10 athletes who had fled the country to avoid war and terrorism participated in the Olympic Games wearing the five-wheeled flag for the first time in Olympic history. At the opening ceremony of the Rio Olympics, he appeared as the last, 206th, and received a warm applause.
