Women: France is the 3rd nation in the world in terms of graduates

The International Federation (FIBA) is committed to having more women in all areas of basketball and as such has released a comprehensive survey that provides a critical overview of the current state of women’s basketball.

The survey, presented to the 213 member national federations of FIBA, enabled FIBA ​​to measure and assess the global landscape of women’s basketball, with the aim of helping to inform and adapt its plans. strategic implementation.

FIBA’s goal is to increase the number of women who play, coach and referee, as well as the number of fans of women’s basketball and to ensure that more women participate in the governance of the game. sport within FIBA.

The survey consisted of 130 questions, which covered topics ranging from national players and teams, clubs and national competitions to governance, communication, marketing and operational structures.

The report thus shows that:

  • 83% of national federations have a senior women’s national team
  • The popularity of the 3 × 3 is growing at a spectacular rate, with 23 nations represented in the first season of the FIBA ​​3 × 3 Women’s Series in 2019, with stops in 15 different locations around the world.
  • 8.1 million fans on FIBA ​​women’s event websites in 2019
  • The United States leads the ranking of female practitioners with 1.8 million licensed players registered by their national federation, followed by Japan (253,000), France (170,000), Australia (147,000), Spain (133,000), and Russia (53,000).
  • 13,500 professional female players are listed across the world.
  • In 39 countries basketball appears in the top 3 of the most popular sports.
