Venezuelan golfer Jonathan Vegas raised the number of national qualifiers to the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games to 40, after ranking 39 in the Olympic ranking of the International Golf Federation (IGF), which closed for men on June 21 , with a total of 15 representatives of the Pan-American area belonging to nine nations among the 60 eligible for the great universal sports fair.
Vegas, who occupied the 50th place in the last edition of Rio 2016, finished in position 39 of the ranking after being in the top 50 of the US Open 2021, one of the most iconic tournaments of the PGA circuit, where the man from Monaco concluded the competition at 16 strokes of the Spanish and champion, Jon Rahm.
“It is not the USA Open that I expected, this week was not the best but we gave it our all on the field. It was undoubtedly a very difficult week with demanding tournaments ”, explained the Creole to ESPN, who said he had“ very positive feelings for what is coming ”.
“I have to rest a bit, to be able to give my best in the Play Offs and then in the Olympic Games, which is what is on my agenda,” said the Venezuelan.
Following the postponement of the Olympic Games for this year, the IGF and the International Olympic Committee announced in April an adjustment to the classification system in which athletes accumulated Olympic ranking points during a period that ended on June 21 for men and June 28, 2021 for the ladies. To date there have been 710 men’s events and 292 women’s events that have contributed to their respective rankings.
The IGF will announce on July 1 the names of the golfers who will attend Tokyo 2020, the second Olympic Games in Vegas.
Golf in Tokyo 2020 will be played from July 29 to August 1 at the Kasumigaseki Country Club. END / IND
