Trail Blazers hires former league star Bilaps as head coach

The team announced Bilaps’ joining the coaching corps on Sunday.

Since November last year, the former league star has worked as an assistant coach for the Los Angeles Clippers. He will be the 15th head coach of the Trail Blazers team.

The 44-year-old Bilaps was selected for the All-Star Game five times during his basketball career. In 2016, the Detroit Pistons craved a Bilaps shirt with the first number on the ceiling.

The Portland unit has reached the playoffs for eight consecutive seasons, but five of them have lost in the first round. Two years ago, the Trail Blazers reached the final of the conference, but the Golden State Warriors made concessions in four matches.

In the last five seasons, the Trail Blazers have reached the second round of the play-off only once.

During his career, Bilaps represented the Boston Celtics, the Pistons, the Toronto Raptors, the Denver Nuggets, the Minnesota Timberwolves, the New York Knicks and the Clippers.

In 2004, he was crowned an NBA champion in the Pistons and also the most valuable player in the playoffs. In 2010, he celebrated his victory in the World Cup with the US national team.
