Sorry, we’re going to be a little lyrical here. Thorgan Hazard was voted ‘Man of the Match’ by UEFA for making a difference. The left wingback was indeed good, but nothing compared to what Thomas Vermaelen did. What a match!
Entertainment was incredible. Every intervention was the right one. In addition, he – if not the greatest defender – headed away just about everything that came in the sixteen. A fantastic match that was close to perfection.
Everyone doubted our defensive compartment, but Vermaelen proved once again that – if he hadn’t had so many injuries – he could have been world top. Many who saw him play will have wondered why he plays in Japan.
Cristiano Ronaldo barely got a usable ball, but if one came close, there was always Vermaelen. CR7 never passed him. Not a single Portuguese by the way.
