The return to face-to-face activities continues in college sports. On this occasion, the UNAM representative men’s basketball team visited the services of the Sports Medicine Directorate attached to the General Directorate of University Sports, to find out under what conditions its members return to face-to-face training.

In this way, the morphofunctional evaluations of representative teams and athletes of the UNAM were resumed, starting with the team led by coach Daniel Gmez Len, based on the Guidelines for the return of University Sports in the framework of the Pandemic that establish a return to face-to-face activities gradually and safely.

Marco Ricardo Rodrguez Romero, a student from the Faculty of Political and Social Sciences, and selected auriazul for men’s basketball, commented: we are becoming more and more attached to the return to face-to-face activities. By carrying out physical and medical tests, we feel that little by little we are returning to the routine. We will know how we really are physically.

TESTS
For her part, Mara Cristina Rodrguez Gutirrez, head of Sports Medicine, pointed out that at the moment we have a smaller number of evaluated, only four per day. Before we can do up to ten, but now we are taking great care to preserve conditions of social distancing and health control. The athletes arrive with their face masks, mask and answer a questionnaire to find out if they have suffered from Coronavirus or have had contact with a sick patient.

At this time it is very important to know how the boys are, in what physical conditions they arrive, to determine the appropriate physical workloads and thus avoid injuries, after a long period where they stayed with distance training guided by their coach, he said. Dr. Cristina Rodríguez, who added that it is vitally important to verify the current condition of the heart in each athlete.

Morphofunctional assessment consists of biochemical tests to measure glucose, cholesterol, triglyceride, and rich acid levels. A medical history is taken to assess the state of health through medical questioning and a resting electrocardiogram is taken, with which alterations in the heart are detected or ruled out. Also included are studies in dentistry, psychology, biomechanics, and nutrition.

In the anthropometric evaluation, information is obtained on the body composition of fat, muscle and bone, as well as the tendencies of the physical constitution in the players. In the ergometry laboratory, the stress test is performed on a treadmill, where the adaptation of the heart and the physical capacity of the individual are evaluated.
