Theresa Stoll wins bronze

Hagn (1993), Wanner (2003), Stoll (2021); would actually be a good headline too.

Why?

Theresa’s medal is the first of a Bavarian judoka since Florian Wanner’s victory at the 2003 World Cup.

Theresa’s medal is the first for a Bavarian woman since Johanna Hagn won the title in Hamilton in 1993 and, above all, it is the second women’s medal for a Bavarian sportswoman.

Of course, many other athletes have won medals at world championships, but not among adults or in the respective time between these years.

Theresa and Amelie Stoll started judo in October 2003, when Florian was world champion. Every day the two are in the hall in Großhadern and can see how the successful athletes of the past, present and future train here, have fun together and are respected. Every day the two see how the successes are displayed here and the trophies are displayed. In the course of time, both of them have certainly developed the goal of belonging, to be at the forefront from time to time.

The twins can support, encourage, drive and comfort each other in sport, at school and now at university. Sister, girlfriend, opponent and maybe that’s why the two are so important to each other.

Both are of course supported by family, friends, the club, the association, Sporthilfe with its numerous partners and Schumacher Packaging.

Combining a medical degree and competitive sport and being successful in both requires a lot of discipline. Determination and focus on the task at hand. Theresa approached the tournament in Budapest in exactly the same way.

The goal? First and foremost, probably to fight for as many points as possible so that Theresa can start the games as one of the top 8 in the world. That would ensure her the best possible solution and above all it would be certain that one of the top 4 fighters will only come in the pool finals.

At the World Championships in Budapest Theresa already got a foretaste of this “draw advantage” of the top 8. After two early wins by Ippon (full point) Theresa was in the pool finals. Here she met J. Klimkait (Canada). In a strong fight in which every fighter had their chances, Theresa lost in the end with Wazaari (half point) against the future world champion.

Theresa was able to dominate the fight against the strong Russian Konkina with her confident fighting style and in the end she won the fight for a place in the small final.

Small final – opponent: Christa DeGushi (Canada) – reigning world champion

Concentrated Theresa goes to the mat. Make no mistake, this opponent is strong but also beatable. The other Canadian almost hit her. She wants this medal, this medal is still missing from the adults. With her grip and her techniques, Theresa can harass the opponent and gradually develop an advantage of 2 to zero penalties. Final gong, a penalty or a rating is still missing to win.

Extension, don’t let up.

With the first approach, an O-Soto-Gari (large outer sickle), Theresa in the Golden-Sore can surprise and throw her opponent. Full on his back and the referee pulls up his arm. IPPON! Bronze! With this strong competition, Theresa Stoll can make her dream of a world championship medal come true.
