We spoke with Santiago Acosta, a young Uruguayan athlete who will represent his country in the Pan American Sambo Championship.

At 27 years old, Santiago Acosta is a Jiu Jitsu and Sambo fighter. This July 13, he will travel to Colombia to represent his country in the Pan American Sambo Championship. The tournament will take place between the 15th and 19th of that month in the city of Villavicencio.

“Sambo is one of the four most recognized fighting sports in the world and with the greatest evolution,” Santiago told Sputnik.

“It has several modalities, with blows or without blows; it is a fairly complete sport and it is very good for people who like contact sports,” he added.

Sambo was developed in the Soviet Union after the Russian Revolution of 1917 and means “self defense without weapons”. It is a modern martial art that assimilated the most effective techniques of different melee combat sports such as Judo, Karate, Kung Fu or Jiu Jitsu.
The Uruguayan fighter also referred to Russian President Vladimir Putin, who practice this discipline: “I have seen videos of Putin practicing and you really realize right away that he has been training for years [Sambo] for the technique he has and for the quality of his movements, “Acosta said.
