The rules change in the NBA: the era of “unnatural” offensive movements is over

For next season, the NBA plans to change some rules regarding fouling. The most studied are the new rules to manage the offensive movements of the players to try to take shots and fouls.

The League committee met in early June to study rule changes that would prevent players from using unnatural shooting movements to attract fouls. In recent years, in fact, NBA players have begun to seek contact with defenders by forcing unnatural offensive movements with the sole purpose of seeing a foul whistle in favor, going to exploit what is an obvious gap in the refereeing rules.

The NBA, should the rules come into effect, will specifically train referees on these moves:

  • A shooter who launches or leans against a defender at an unnatural defined angle
  • A shooter who kicks his leg at an unnatural angle
  • An attacker who abruptly deviates from his trajectory towards a defender in an unnatural manner

In these situations, the referees will determine whether these actions justify “no-calls” or offensive fouls. The changes could debut as early as the Las Vegas Summer League in August.

The subject of forced fouls has become increasingly central in discussions around the American basketball championship. More and more players have begun to use the current rules to constantly bring themselves to the line, up to the limit of intolerability. At the expense not only many defenders who have complained about this continuous search for contact and then aim for an easy shot, but also the fans and professionals.

The changes by the League should rebalance the situation, making shooting from the line no longer an easy shortcut against contact defenders.
