The 2021 activities of the Puribec Baseball League will begin this Friday when the Le Shaker team from Rimouski will visit Rivière-du-Loup. The first local game in Rimouski will be presented on June 27, at 2 p.m., against La Pocatière. After several months of uncertainty, the leaders are proposing a schedule of 18 games in addition to the playoffs.

This year, seven teams will fight for top honors. The Matane and Edmundston teams withdraw from the circuit. Matane is taking a break due to a lack of players. This decision could be revised in a future season. As for Edmundston, the presence of American players (Maine) on this team makes their participation impossible given the closed borders. The Grand Falls team can join the league this year.

“It could happen that Matane comes back in the future. They didn’t take a year off. Instead, they have left the league for now. So we made a special draft for the players of Matane, what is called a final draft… It’s not a loan like last year. The drafted players will really belong to the teams, unlike the 2020 COVID draft where players had the opportunity to come back to play for their team a year later, ”says Denis Bérubé, president of the circuit.

New this year, the conventional scoring system on sheets of paper will be replaced by the electronic platform iScore, which will allow baseball fans in Bas-Saint-Laurent and New Brunswick to follow all games live for free on their smartphone or tablet.

“To do so, all you have to do is download the iScore Central application available on Apple and Android. Fans will be able to follow the exploits of their favorite team. It will also be possible to follow a game live by going to the league website calendar (www.baseballseniorbsl.ca), then on statsenligne and clicking on the icon announcing that a match is in progress and available ”, details M. Bérubé.

Another novelty: like the professional leagues, the circuit adopts an official ball. The Puribec ball will be used by all teams. This will include the signature of the president and will bear the inscription “Ligue senior Puribec” and the logo of this partner.

In bulk

  • In 2021, the seven teams present will make the playoffs.
  • The All-Star Game will not take place this year.
  • Each field will be able to accommodate as many bubbles of 250 spectators as the field can contain.
  • On Sunday June 27 in Rivière-du-Loup, for the first time in Bas-Saint-Laurent, the Claude Raymond practice day will take place for 15-year-old players. An activity that will allow the selection of some of the 18 players who will form the best team in Quebec.

Finally, Puribec commits to a three-year contract as an official sponsor. “Our commitment to this league has lasted 16 years. We are satisfied to be able to extend this financial support for this circuit and to contribute with Baseball Québec to the development of young baseball players with the Minor Baseball Day presented each year in each of the municipalities of the teams in this league ”, rejoices Cédric Brisson, representative at Puribec.
