We’ve been talking about it for some time, but now we’re here: the NBA will very soon introduce new rules to discourage particularly “smart” players, those who in attack seek contact by going against the defender themselves. Two obvious examples but also mentioned in the same rumors about these new rules are James Harden and Trae Young. According to Shams Charania, the new rules could be used as early as the Summer League in Las Vegas next August.
These parameters include the following actions:
- When a player shoots by throwing himself at the defender at an abnormal angle
- When the shooter kicks and extends the leg at an abnormal angle
- When an attacking player abruptly changes direction to end up against a defender
According to The Athletic, these behaviors are coming soon punished with an offensive foul or with a simple no-whistle. In doing so, the NBA aims to discourage such behaviors, thus depriving certain players of the advantage deriving from an abnormal number of free throws.
NBA referees will be trained to properly officiate the following actions used to draw fouls:
– Shooter launches/leans into defender at abnormal angle
– Shooter kicks leg at abnormal angle
– Offensive player abruptly veers off path (sideways/ backwards) into defender https://t.co/9OzldXvH6u
