MADRID, 30 (EUROPA PRESS)

The Spanish tennis players Garbiñe Muguruza, Paula Badosa, Sara Sorribes and Carlos Alcaraz added victories this Wednesday in the Wimbledond tournament, the third ‘Grand Slam’ of the season, on a day that also left a good number of national eliminations, those of Pablo Carreño, Pablo Andújar, Fernando Verdasco, Jaume Munar, Bernabé Zapata and Aliona Bolsava.

Muguruza, the 2017 London grass champion, beat Lesley Kerkhove of the Netherlands 6-1, 6-4. The Spanish-Venezuelan, after giving up just one game in her debut, once again showed a great level, serious with her serve, forceful with her right hand and making very few mistakes on her way to the third round. Garbiñe will not have a reissue of the final he won four years ago, as he will face an Ons Jabeur who eliminated Venus Williams.

In the women’s draw, Badosa won the duel between Spanish women against Aliona Bolsava (6-2, 5-7, 6-2) in the first round, to meet the Kazakh Yúliya Putíntseva on time. Meanwhile, Sorribes debuted with victory (6-3, 3-6, 6-3) against the Croatian Ana Konjuh and now the German Angelique Kerber, champion in 2018, awaits her.

Bautista was unable to complete his second win in London after his match against Miomir Kecmanovic was suspended due to lack of light. The Castellón won the first two sets with a double 6-3, but missed the sentence in the tie-break of the third (6-7 (3)). With 3-2 in favor of the Spanish, the outcome was postponed to Thursday.

Meanwhile, Alcaraz took a battle against the Japanese Yasutaka Uchiyama, in five sets (6-3, 6-7 (7), 6-2, 3-6, 6-3), to win the first game he played in La Catedral, always in struggle despite an irregular game. The young Murcian talent will face second-seeded Russian Daniil Medvedev in the second round.

The day was not good for Spanish tennis, with many eliminated. The jinx was lengthened for Carreño, who one more year left the London grass empty. The Asturian fell in his debut against the American gunner Sam Querrey (7-6, 6-4, 6-5), eliminated in the first round the six times he has competed at Wimbledon.

For his part, Andújar could not even jump on the court and withdrew from his match against Denis Shapovalov due to a broken rib, after his debut of more than five hours with Herbert. On the fast track, Munar also fell to Belarusian Ilia Ivashka (6-1, 7-5, 7-6 (5)) although he had options to come back.

The Spaniard started badly with his serve but improved in the second set and came to get ahead. Ivashka had a great reaction to take the sleeve as well and, despite Munar standing on his feet in the third set, sudden death smiled at the Belarusian to bring down another Spaniard in the first round, a Munar who also does not know what it is to win a match at the All England Tennis Club.

Fernando Verdasco yielded in his debut against the Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov (3-6, 6-3, 6-4, 6-4) and Bernabé Zapata lost in his historic debut in the main draw at Wimbledon, after losing to the Chilean Cristian Garín (6-7 (6), 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2).
