At the Bad Homburg Open, illustrious names of German women’s tennis meet. Many a young player could be in awe of that. The 17-year-old Mara Guth, however, gives the impression that the anticipation of the competition with the big players outweighs her: “I’m super excited. It’s a great opportunity and a great honor for me to play here,” says Guth opposite the hr sport.

What worries you more than the nervousness is the underground. “It’s my first tournament on grass. But that’s also a cool experience. At first I thought the surface was a carpet, but that’s not entirely true either.” After the first rallies, she is said to have said to her coach: “Oh, that could be something!” At the opening event last year, she didn’t even have lawn shoes with her. Guth says: “I definitely have to adapt. I was a bit shocked and intimidated at the beginning. But from training to training it is better on grass.”

Everyone is there – except for grandma

On Sunday at 4:30 p.m. Guth starts in the main draw against the Argentinean Nadia Podoroska. She is supported by fans and family, the Usinger can count on the advantage of being a local hero: “I’m happy that my people can come here. That takes the pressure off me. I know I get the support, no matter how it turns out. ” Unfortunately, her grandmother did not get a card and will watch the games on TV – the HR will be accompanying the tournament in Bad Homburg (all information here).

The tournament at home should only be one of the first steps on the way to a great career. Guth recently left her home for this and moved to Regensburg. In addition, she is now being trained by Michael Geserer. “A lot is happening right now, but I’m very, very positive about it,” says the 17-year-old.

Mara Guth: “I want to become a professional”

There is a remarkable clarity in her words, Guth exudes a healthy amount of self-confidence. She told HR-Sport about her goals: “I want to become a professional player and be able to make a living from tennis. That would be my big dream. Of course I would like to be able to win a Grand Slam one day.”
