With the Euro football, which began last week, opens a key period for sports betting: French stakes could reach between 400 and 600 million euros according to the National Gaming Authority (ANJ). Over the years, the turnover of sports betting, a sector opened to competition in 2010, has continued to increase. It has just passed the annual billion euro mark (over the last four quarters).

In 2020, there were 4.5 million active player accounts in sports betting, far more than in poker (1.8 million) and horse betting (628,000).

Two thirds of these sports bettors are players considered to be “Problematic”, that is to say, suffering from an addiction, half of which is excessive gambling, who present an addiction that leads to serious financial and relationship consequences. According to the Games Observatory, these problem gamblers are most often men, younger than the average, belonging to modest social backgrounds, with a level of education and income lower than the average, and more often unemployed.
