Van Kalmthout finishes in rear in 2nd GP Detroit

9.30 pm: Racing driver Rinus van Kalmthout had to settle for a place in the rear in the IndyCar Series during the second Grand Prix of the weekend in Detroit. The Dutchman finished eighteenth after seventy laps, partly due to a number of extra pit stops. His gap to winner Pato O’Ward from Mexico was almost 17 seconds.

Van Kalmthout had started the race from the third starting position. O’Ward (22) started in sixteenth place. He recorded his second win of the season. O’Ward was only in the lead in the last three laps.

‘VeeKay’ finished second on the street circuit of Belle Island Park the day before, just behind Swedish winner Marcus Ericsson, a former Formula 1 driver.

After eight races, O’Ward leads with 299 points. Van Kalmthout is in fifth place with 243 points.

Gymnast Geurts surprises in Olympic qualifier

7:11 pm: Gymnast Elze Geurts of Turnz Amsterdam has surprisingly won the first qualifier for the Olympic Games. A clear all round brought her to a total of 53,034 points in Rotterdam.

With this she stayed ahead of Lieke Wevers. He fell on beam and floor. Wevers achieved a total of 52,033 points. Third place went to Naomi Visser (51,567), who also did not have a flawless all-around after a fall from the bridge. Wevers achieved the highest daily score on bridge: 13,600, Visser on floor: 13,333.

Last month, 26-year-old Geurts was the last gymnast to be added to the nine-man Olympic track selection of national coach Bram van Bokhoven. “I am very happy that I have come this far. I went into the competition with the feeling that I had already achieved everything I wanted to achieve this season”, Geurts confessed, who unexpectedly turned to first place in Rotterdam. She set her best scores on vault (14.667, highest score of the day) and floor (13.200).

“This comes as a surprise to me,” Geurts remarked. “It is a very strong field. The race actually went very well, I did what I did in training the last period. I am very satisfied with that. It is of course the first qualification, the second is also very important. I think it could go either way.”

Sanne Wevers only came into action in Rotterdam on the beam and bridge components. The 2016 Olympic beam champion set the highest daily score on beam (13.467), but lost three times (9.833) with her new and more difficult program on bridge.

Eythora Thorsdottir, in 2016 still good for ninth place in the all-around during the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, was absent due to an ankle injury. Thorsdottir hopes to be in action during the second qualifier, on June 26.

The four-man selection for Tokyo will be announced on June 28 at the latest. Two reserves are therefore designated.

Golf: Besseling and Luiten in the middle after a mediocre weekend

7:11 pm: Due to poor play at the weekend, the Dutch golfers Wil Besseling and Joost Luiten were unable to play a leading role at the Scandinavian Mixed in Göteborg. Both finished in the middle of the mixed tournament, which was won by Northern Irishman Jonathan Caldwell with a score of 271 strokes (-17). It was his first title on the European tour.

Besseling ended up in 33rd place with a score of 282 strokes. He went around in 70 strokes on Saturday and used 74 strokes on Sunday.

Luiten finished 46th with a total of 285. He was unable to recover from a difficult third round of 78 strokes on Sunday. Luiten had a lot of trouble with the stormy wind on the track on Saturday. He dropped through five bogeys and two double bogeys from second to 27th place. A day later, Luiten went around in 75 strokes, dropping him even further in the final standings.

In the mixed tournament from the European tour, men and women played the same eighteen holes simultaneously and competed for the same winner’s trophy and a prize pool of 1 million euros. England’s Alice Hewson was the top golfer in third place with a score of 273 strokes.

Gold for Olympic sailing teams in Medemblik

5:40 PM: The two Olympic sailing teams of the Netherlands in the 49er class have met expectations in their own country. Annemiek Bekkering and Annette Duetz as well as Bart Lambriex and Pim van Vugt closed the Allianz Regatta in Medemblik with the overall victory. Bekkering and Duetz did so in style. They triumphed in the final medal race with ten boats and double points.

Bekkering and Duetz started the final as classification leaders and were not surprised by the competition. The two-time world champions recorded their seventh victory in twelve races in the medal race.

“This was an important tournament in our preparation for the Games,” said Bekkering with satisfaction. “It was good conditions for us to deal with. There was little wind or rather variable wind. We haven’t been able to train much on that in the past winter. So that was great to have here. The wind was also very unstable in the medal race. So we had to race very sharply, work well together and communicate well and we did that.”

Lambriex and Van Vugt only needed third place in the medal race to take the overall victory. German leaders Jakob Meggendorfer and Andreas Spranger had to settle for fourth place in the final. Both teams therefore finished on the same number of points. Thanks to the better classification in the medal race, the Dutch duo took first place in the final standings.

Motocross rider Herlings opens MXGP season with a second place

3:55 pm: Jeffrey Herlings has started the World Championship in the MXGP class with a second place in the Russian Grand Prix. The 26-year-old motocross rider had to settle for fourth in the first moto and second in the second moto at the Orlyonok track.

The victory in the GP of Russia went to the Slovenian Tim Gajser. The 2019 and 2020 World Champion was by far the best in both motos. With 50 points, he has ten points more than Herlings in the World Cup standings.

Herlings had to fight back from eleventh position in the first moto after a poor start. He overtook Italian Alessandro Lupino towards the end of the race to finish fourth. In the second moto, the 2018 Brabant world champion was quickly in third place and he continued to ride there for a long time until Antonio Cairoli crashed in front of him and had to give up with a faulty engine.

Krejcikova and Siniakova were the best at a Grand Slam tournament for the third time. In 2018 they won both Roland Garros and Wimbledon.

21 years ago, Frenchwoman Mary Pierce was the last tennis star to win both singles and doubles. In 2000 she won the doubles with Martina Hingis.

The 25-year-old Krejcikova was the superior of the Russian Anastasia Pavlioetshenkova in an exciting singles final with 6-1 2-6 6-4 on Saturday.

Football: Venezuela calls up 15 new players for Copa América

6.55 am: The Venezuelan Football Association has called up 15 new players to the Copa América after 12 members of the country’s football delegation tested positive for the corona virus on the eve of the opening game against host country Brazil. Among the infected members are eight players who immediately went into isolation.

Venezuela’s Portuguese coach José Peseiro says the players’ drop-out has disrupted his team’s preparation. “Tomorrow we will play with eleven players who have never trained or played together before.” Four people from the Bolivian delegation also tested positive. According to a statement from the Bolivian Football Association, three players and one member of the technical staff are involved.

Brazil’s Health Minister Marcelo Queiroga said the infected players will only be allowed to leave the country after a negative corona test. “There will be no coming and going of players. Players who test positive will remain in quarantine.”

The corona outbreak in the Venezuelan team is another blow to the Copa América that has been criticized from all sides for the health situation in Brazil, the new host country after the withdrawal of Argentina and Colombia. Brazil is the country worst hit by the pandemic after the United States.

Title holder Brazil opens the tournament on Sunday in Brasilia against Venezuela. The Copa América is played in five stadiums in four cities: Brasilia, Cuiabá, Goiânia and Rio de Janeiro, which has two stadiums. The 47th edition of the South American Championship, with ten participating countries, will be played without an audience in the stadiums. All teams have to stay in their own ‘bubble’.
