Football: National coach Borkelmans and assistant Nilis leave Jordan
10:58 PM For national coach Vital Borkelmans and his assistant Luc Nilis, the adventure in Jordan is over. The Belgian duo failed to lead the country from the Middle East to the 2022 World Cup. They therefore resign from their position.
Jordan lost 1-0 to Australia on Tuesday on the last day of the qualifying tournament. As a result, Borkelmans’ team was eliminated as number 3 in the group.
Borkelmans has been at the head of the Jordanian selection since 2018. Iraqi Adnan Hamad is the new national coach.
Handball: Amega also drops out for the Olympics due to knee injury
7:23 PM: Delaila Amega will miss the Tokyo Olympics due to a serious knee injury. The handball player sustained the injury during a training session with the Dutch selection. The 23-year-old player has to undergo surgery. It is Amega’s third serious knee injury in more than two years.
“It is really really bad that I have suffered a serious knee injury again,” said Amega. “I am very upset about it. Right now I want to clear my head and take time for myself. Then I’ll see if everything is started again with surgery.”
Star player Estavana Polman announced on Tuesday that she has to let the Games pass by. She has decided to have surgery again on her right knee.
The handball players in Japan also have to do without Yvette Broch, who refuses to be vaccinated against the corona virus and has therefore decided not to go along. Nycke Groot, who, like Broch, returned to the Orange squad this year, recently suffered a shoulder injury. However, the damage appears to be minor.
Volleyball: Volleyball players lose in Nations League in four sets to Italy
6.52 pm: The volleyball players were unable to continue the good line of the victory against France the day before in the Nations League. Against Italy, the team of national coach Roberto Piazza suffered its seventh defeat in Rimini. Italy won in four sets: 25-19 25-23 23-25 25-21.
The Netherlands had fought back a day earlier from a 2-0 deficit in sets against France. The volleyball players recorded their second win after an earlier victory over Germany.
The ‘Tall Men’ of Piazza will play against the United States on Thursday. They close the Nations League next week with games against Canada, Serbia and Australia. A place in the top 4 and therefore qualification for the semi-finals is already out of reach.
Cycling: Lampaert keeps Evenepoel from Belgian time trial title
Yves Lampaert has won the Belgian time trial title for the second time. The 30-year-old Deceuninck – Quick-Step rider defeated his teammate and favorite Remco Evenepoel in Ingelmunster. Lampaert was 20 seconds faster than his 21-year-old teammate on a course of 38 kilometers with 44.48 minutes. The bronze went to world hour record holder Yves Lampaert.
Lampaert, who previously grabbed the title in 2017, succeeds Wout van Aert on the honors list. The Jumbo-Visma rider did not appear at the start in Ingelmunster.
In the women’s race, Lotte Kopecky became Belgian time trial champion for the third time in a row.
Gymnastics: Friday judgment in summary proceedings gymnastics coach Wevers against KNGU
3:21 pm: The court in Zutphen will rule next Friday in summary proceedings between gymnastics coach Vincent Wevers and the KNGU gymnastics union. That’s earlier than expected.
Wevers demands that the gymnastics association still takes him to the Olympic Games as a coach. He disagrees with the gymnastics association, which decided in April that the gymnasts should not be accompanied by their personal coaches during the Games.
The association determined that national coach Bram van Bokhoven and coaches Aimee Boorman and José van der Veen accompany the Dutch gymnastics team in Japan.
Wevers is the father of the gymnasts Sanne and Lieke Wevers and one of the coaches who is being investigated by the Institute for Sports Law (ISR) into undesirable and transgressive behaviour.

Football: Manchester City open Premier League against Tottenham
10.49 am: Manchester City will play Tottenham Hotspur in the first round of the new season in the Premier League. The England football champion starts the season with an away game. The Premier League released the schedule on Wednesday. For the time being, all matches in the opening round are scheduled for Saturday 14 August.
Chelsea, who won the Champions League by beating City in the final, will start at home against Crystal Palace. Liverpool, which lost the title last season, opens with a game at the newly promoted Norwich. Number 2 Manchester United receive Leeds.
Football: Copa America reports 53 infections since Sunday
10.11 am: Around the Copa America football tournament in Brazil, 53 people have now tested positive for the corona virus. This has been confirmed by the Ministry of Health of the host country.
Since Sunday, the opening day, these people have taken a positive corona test. It concerns 27 players and delegation members and 26 employees of the various support companies hired for the tournament.
It was previously announced that various members of the Venezuelan, Bolivian and Colombian delegations tested positive for the corona virus.
Due to the health situation in Brazil, the country with one of the highest infection rates in the world, the tournament was already under discussion. Brazil was only assigned the organization shortly before the start, after Argentina and Colombia withdrew due to the pandemic, among other things.
Basketball: Durant leads Brooklyn to win in playoffs
8.09 am: Led by Kevin Durant, the Brooklyn Nets basketball players beat the Milwaukee Bucks in the playoffs of the American professional league NBA. It was 114-108. In the best-of-seven of the semi-finals, Brooklyn now has a 3-2 lead.
Durant was good for 49 points, in a game in which he played every minute. He also had 17 rebounds and 10 assists. Durant was also more or less personally responsible for Milwaukee losing a 17-point lead in the third quarter.
“I wasn’t supposed to play that much,” Durant said afterwards. “But my coach told me to stay standing as long as I felt good. So I just did that.”
