Regionalliga: Borussia Mönchengladbach’s U23s say goodbye to 15 players

“This summer we will completely restructure and significantly rejuvenate the squad. With that we are going back to our roots, so to speak. The U23 should again be a real development pool for young players”, explained Borussia’s junior director Roland Virkus. “We have had a season with ups and downs. In this respect, we can be proud of this unusual regional league season.”

As part of this restructuring, 15 players will leave the club. The most famous face among them is Thomas Kraus. The 34-year-old captain came to Borussia in the summer of 2015, scored 46 goals in 171 regional league games and had also been a junior coach at the club for several years. Kraus will join 1. FC Köln’s U21s for the coming season, for whom the attacker played from 2008 to 2010.

Two players made their Bundesliga debuts under Hecking

Marcel Benger (22), who completed his only Bundesliga game to date under the then professional coach Dieter Hecking, is drawn to second division Holstein Kiel.
