Pavluchenko is the first finalist of the French Open

Pavlučenkova (WTA 32nd) defeated Slovenian Tamara Zidanšek (WTA 85) in the semifinals of the 31st tournament (WTA 32nd).

For the first time in their careers, both tennis players played in the semifinals of a Grand Slam tournament. The 29-year-old Pavluchenko is playing in her 52nd “Grand Slam” tournament, but the previous times had not progressed beyond the quarterfinals, reaching this stage in six competitions.

Pavluchenko is the first tennis player to have played at least 50 Grand Slam tournaments before reaching the final.

17 years ago in Paris, Anastasia Miskin and Yelena Dementieva became the first Russian tennis players to reach the finals of the Grand Slam women’s singles tournament. They were followed by Maria Sharapova, Svetlana Kuznetsova, Dinara Safina, Vera Zvonarjova and now Pavluchenko.

The Greek Marija Sakari (WTA 18th) and Barbora Krejchikova (WTA 33rd) will meet in the second semi-final on Thursday.

It is significant that for the second time in the open era, tennis players who have not played in the “Grand Slam” semifinals enter one of the top four tournaments. Previously, this was experienced in 1978 in Australia. For the fifth time, “Roland Garros” will be championed by a tennis player who is sown outside the top ten or is among the unsown tennis players.

It has already been reported that Latvian tennis players Alona Ostapenko and Anastasia Sevastova did not win the first round of the French Open in Paris.

The second Grand Slam of the season – the French Open – will run until June 13, when the 2021 Tokyo Olympics qualify. The 56 best tennis players according to the WTA ranking will enter the Olympic Games, but there will be no more than four athletes from one country. Both Latvian representatives are currently in the qualification zone.
