Norris receives grid penalty for Azerbaijan Grand Prix after qualifying violation

Lando Norris has received a three-place grid penalty for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix and will also receive three penalty points on his license. The British driver should have entered the pits under the red flag but instead stayed on track.

Norris had to report to the stewards at 4 p.m. Dutch time, because he was accused of driving under the red flag during qualifying. The McLaren driver was driving on the long straight when the red flag was displayed. He then contacted the pit wall as he had no idea what to do. However, by the time he was told to enter the pits it was already too late and he had already crossed the start/finish line, forcing him to complete an extra lap.

Gridstraf Land Norris

“Normally the stewards consider a five-place grid penalty appropriate if a red flag is not respected during qualifying. As the drivers had only a short period to react, due to his position on the track, a three-place grid penalty is sufficient.” said the stewards on duty.

Norris qualified in sixth place, but will start from ninth on Sunday afternoon. In addition to the three-place grid penalty, the British driver has also received three penalty points on his license. This brings his total to eight penalty points. His next penalty points will not expire until July 10, which means that he will have to watch out for the coming month.
