NFL Seeks to Insert Flag Football into Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Program

With an eye on the increasing popularity of American football around the world, the NFL (National Football League) is trying to insert the Football Flag don’t program two 2028 Olympic Games, which will take place in Los Angeles.

The inclusion would be through the IFAF (International Federation of American Football) and yes USA Football, with institutional and financial support from the NFL. The event will already be part of the 2022 World Games, which will be held in Birmingham, also in the United States.

According to the NFL, the advantage of the sport is that it is easy to play and requires virtually no protection. The play is stopped when a player pulls one of the two cloths that are hanging from the opponent’s waist.

The IFAF wants to include a more compact version of the sport, with five athletes on each side in a smaller field (maximum is eight athletes). Currently, 72 nations are affiliated to the entity, including the Brazil. The United States lead the world ranking in both suits, while the Brazilian team is in seventh place in the men’s.

The NFL’s head of international operations, Damani Leech, told the agency Reuters who is supporting USA Football and IFAF’s attempt to include the sport in the 2028 Games, but has confirmed that the IFAF will coordinate the bid.

Richard Maclean, also in an interview with Reuters, said that with the correct support, there is the possibility of the modality being included in the Olympic program of the 2028 Games.

It is worth noting that there is still no scheduled date for the announcement of the modalities chosen by Los Angeles for the 2028 program.
