Ducati presented an official request for clarification to the Race Direction regarding the situation of Fabio Quartararo after the end of the MotoGP Catalonian GP. The Yamaha Frenchman crossed the line third but was relegated to fourth after a 3 ”penalty for“ cutting the track at turns 1 and 2 ”. But the problem for the current World Championship leader is that he finished the race with the suit completely open on the front. For the race marshals, the Yamaha rider actually broke the technical regulations regarding race holding: this is why he was given another 3 ”penalties that made him slip to sixth place. The Frenchman now has 14 points (and no more 17) on the second, Zarco.

the motogp rules

Point 2.4.5.2 of the competition rules states that “the driver’s equipment must be worn, properly fastened, during the entire duration of the activity on the track”. According to this rule, the Frenchman broke the rules, as recognized by the Race Direction: “having raced – reads the final statement of the stewards – with the suit not properly fastened and without the obligatory chest protector (the” chest protector ” ), was penalized by 3 seconds compared to the race result of the Catalan GP ”. “Several teams are aware of a possible infringement of the rules and now it is up to the Stewards to decide”, explained Paolo Ciabatti, Ducati sporting director, before the final verdict. Suzuki also made the same request to clarify the way in which Quartararo ended the race: the open suit represents a serious danger for the rider in the event of a fall. This is why the Management decided for the second penalty after the first three seconds inflicted for cutting corners 1-2.

the quartararo error

It wasn’t a zip fault that caused Quartararo’s suit problem, but his clumsy attempt to open it. The chest protector, the front protection that helps the riders in the event of a fall, moved and annoyed the rider who opened the zipper slightly to breathe better. However, due to the high speed, the hinge then opened completely and at that point, in the race, it was difficult for Quartararo to remedy. The proof that the suit was intact came later, when – once the race was over – the Frenchman actually closed the zip with a gesture of annoyance at the unfortunate inconvenience.
