MLB summary of June 14, 2021 in the Nationale: Schwarber hit a fourth home run in three days

The Washington Nationals defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates 3-2 on Monday night.

Kyle Schwarber hit a home run to break the tie in the seventh inning, at the expense of Clay Holmes (2-2). It was his fourth in three days.

He was sent out first in the batting order on Saturday, setting the tone with one home run, and then two more on Sunday.

Tonight, he also produced a run in the third inning and had a walk. He was only called out once in the first set.

Jon Lester was solid for 5 innings and a shot from the mound to help the Nats triumph for the third time in four outings. It was only the fourth time in nine starts that the 37-year-old southpaw had made it to the sixth.

Wander Suero then replaced him in the seventh. He allowed a single and then Erik Gonzalez’s sacrifice ball tied it 2-2.

Kyle Finnegan (3-2) struck out two batters in the eighth and did not allow a run, then Brad Hand confirmed his 12 in the ninth inning.e rescue in 14 attempts.

Kevin Newman was the author of a home run in loss.

Rare victory for the Mets at the Cubs

David Peterson conceded a hit in six innings of work and helped the New York Mets defeat the Chicago Cubs at home for the first time in exactly four years, 5-2.

Dominic Smith hit a home run for the Mets, who curbed the Cubs’ five-game winning streak in the first of a four-game series between section leaders in the National League.

The Mets scored full points after two strikeouts, and ended a seven-game losing streak at Citi Field against the Cubs that began on May 31, 2018.

Peterson (2-5) earned his first victory in two months. In his last nine starts, the left-handed gunner was 0-4 and an earned runs average of 6.32, including a 0-2 record and a 9.88 average in his previous four outings.

However, he only gave Eric Sogard a single, in the third set, before taking it on the wrong foot to end the set. He also allowed Sergio Alcantara a walk in the sixth inning.

Peterson made just 73 shots.

Jake Arrieta (5-7) stood up to Peterson until the fourth inning when Smith hit a single to end a 0-for-20 lethargy. After a walk on Billy McKinney, Smith crossed the plate following a single from James McCann.

Kevin Pillar followed with a double good for two points.

Smith hit his homer in the fifth inning, and Brandon Drury produced the Mets’ other run with a single in the sixth inning.

Anthony Rizzo and Patrick Wisdom slammed back-to-back home runs against reliever Trevor May in the seventh inning.

With three strikeouts in the ninth inning, Edwin Diaz collected his 13th save of the season.
