María Morillo: “For me, basketball is an incredible sport” | Zamora Day

María Morillo is the captain of the Caja Rural Zamarat cadet team. Soccer player in the beginning, she opted for basketball, thanks to her father, who took her to her first game: “It was more of a coincidence, because they had invited us. I could not say exactly what I liked, it was many years ago …, but it may be that I was impressed by how they could score on something that was so high or the sleight of hand with the ball, although I also liked the way they encouraged the fans or the players, who did not give up at any time. To this day, it seems to me that basketball is beautiful all over it, for any of its characteristics. I think it is an incredible sport ”.

At 15 years old – “I will be 16 in September” (he clarifies) -, he has been playing since he was seven, almost nine, therefore, and moves on the court as a forward or guard, “depending on the rest of the teammates who are on the field. ”.

A regular at the big, big, professional games, she names Ana Carlota when I ask her about her favorite player, but then she confesses that she coached her last year. He also names me the Italian Elisa Policari: “She is very young, but she shows that it doesn’t matter how young you are to achieve your goals. Ana Carlota taught us, above all, to play in the low post and, although I don’t play pivot, her training did help me ”.

The fact that Lucía Pinto came to play with the first team made her excited, “because it shows that we are more than capable of competing against high-level players.” What if she would like to see herself in that situation: “It’s a dream for me, with effort and dedication, anything can be done.”

Immune to discouragement, María Morillo is captain, as we have already said, of the Zamarat Caja Rural cadet team and her captaincy was not awarded by hand, but as a reward for her dedication: “because she has empathy with her colleagues and she is always encouraging them”, a little bird told me.
