Judocas go to the World Cup in Hungary, last qualifying to Tokyo

EL NUEVO DIARIO, SANTO DOMINGO. With a total of three athletes, the Dominican Republic will be present at the Senior Judo World Championship that will distribute points for the tournament of that sport that will take place at the Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan.

The Judo World Cup, which will be held from the 6th to the 13th of this month, will be held at the László Papp Sports Arena in Budapest.

The World Cup is the closing event to accumulate points in the International Judo Federation (IJF) ranking for the Tokyo Olympics.

The Dominican delegation is made up of athletes Robert Florentino, in the category less than 90 kilos; Wander Mateo, who will compete in less than 66 kilograms, and Medickson del Orbe, in less than 81 kilos. In addition to the athletes, coach Wilkin Ogando also made the trip.

The participation of the Dominican representation in the Hungarian Judo World Cup has been possible with the support of the Ministry of Sports, the Dominican Olympic Committee (COD) and the Creating Olympic Dreams Group (CRESO).

The World Cup tournament will bring together 12 of the first 14 places in the world ranking, which already have their place secured for the Tokyo Games and seek to maintain optimal form just under two months before the start of the multisport event.

Dominican athletes have been training at the High Technification Center, in Valencia, Spain, from where they left for the city of Budapest, Hungary.

The Hungarian Judo World Cup will feature a total of 703 competitors from 131 countries on five continents. The male branch will have 412 judokas, while in female 291 will participate.

For the Pan American Confederation there will be 103 athletes from 23 countries. The largest representation will be Europe, with 344 competitors from a total of 45 nations.

The Olympic Games will be held this year in Tokyo, Japan, of July 23 to August 8.

After the coronavirus pandemic, the International Judo Federation found it necessary to reschedule the qualifiers for the tournament of that sport of the Olympic appointment.

The president of the Dominican Judo Federation (Fedojudo), Gilberto García, traveled to Hungary to take part in the program of activities of the Congress of the International Judo Federation (IJF) where the broad program of the entity is debated.

The congress, chaired by the president of the organization Marius Vizer, takes place prior to the start of the Absolute World Championship competitions, whose bouts begin this Sunday.

Once the competition program for the World Cup in Hungary is over, the IJF will sum up total points and announce the athletes qualified for the Tokyo Olympics.
