The president of the Nicaraguan Judo Federation, Donald Somarriba, confirmed that Izayana Adelina Marenco Vivas, 28, will represent our country at the Tokyo Olympic Games.

To achieve the classification, Marenco Vivas obtained the points with a Silver Medal in the Pan American Championships in Mexico and Peru, and a good performance in the World Cup in Hungary, all in 2020.

“It was a very difficult process, especially due to the uncertainty of the Pandemic,” said the athlete, who has a degree in Marine Biology and is studying a technician in Business Administration.

With Izayana, there are three Nicaraguan athletes with direct qualification for the Olympic event; the other two are: the weightlifter Sema Nancy Loudrick and the rower Félix Damian Potoy. And two more athletes who received an invitation card: the shooter Edwin Barberena and the Evidelia González t-shirt.

In the history of our five Nicaraguan judokas have had the opportunity to participate in the Olympic Games:

  • Erwin García, 22 years old, 70 kilograms in Munich 1972
  • Oswaldo Cornavaca, 20 years old, 70 kilograms in Montreal 1976
  • Ricky Dixon, 26, 78 kilograms in Atlanta 1996
  • Arnulfo Betanco, 24 years old, +95 kilograms in Atlanta 1996
