Italy in large numbers at the Tokyo Olympics: 342 athletes for 33 different disciplines

It will be a large Italy (to date with 171 men and 171 qualified women) and engaged in 33 different disciplines the one that in a month and two days will present itself at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, the first forced to postpone.

Never in history had an edition of the Games, be they summer or winter, been postponed: only cancellations and for war reasons. The Italia Team with 342 qualified athletes, be they with individual passes (127) or Olympic cards, is approaching the virtual podium of the most numerous contingents ever.

In fact, in the crosshairs of Coni and president Giovanni Malagò (voted by almost all national federations) there is 347 which corresponds to the Azzurri qualified for Atlanta 1996. In first place there is Athens 2004 with 367 qualified athletes followed by Sydney 2000 with 361. Up to Sunday qualifications are still possible in swimming, until Tuesday 29 in athletics, in these days, for example, the rankings of golf and other sports will be made official.

At the team level, Italy still hopes to qualify for men’s basketball: the national team will play the qualifying tournament in Belgrade from tomorrow to 4 July. To date, four teams have already qualified for Tokyo: men’s and women’s volleyball, softball and men’s water polo.

The latest qualifiers came from archery, in particular from the women’s team that finished third in the Paris qualifying tournament. To snatch the qualification were Tatiana Andreoli, Lucilla Boari and Chiara Rebagliati winners of the challenge for third place against Spain (5-3). Nothing to do, however, for the men’s training: in Tokyo there will be only one male archer who will compete in the individual.
