Exhausted, physically and mentally, this is what emerges from the testimonies of the Lakers and the Heat who had to face a sequence which was fatal to them, between injuries, fatigue and this Covid-19 which mistreated the organizations.
Between the end of July 2020, when the 2019/20 season resumes and early June 2021, when the Lakers were eliminated in the first round of the playoffs, Markieff Morris played a total of 92 games (67 regular season, 25 of playoffs). Even if Marcus’ brother is not the most sought-after player during this period, with ultimately limited playing time, he claims to have had the hardest season of his career.
“I hesitated to call it that, but I’ll say it: it’s been a stressful year with this Covid shit”, sent the twin brother of Marcus Morris. “A lot of the guys in this league, a majority, are mentally strong so we’ve been able to get through that because we love the sport, we love being able to support our families. So it’s a sacrifice we made, but this has been the most difficult year of my basketball career ”.
Two seasons in one, a tough diet
For Markieff Morris, it is not so much the condensed season (72 games in less than five months) that has worn the organizations, but rather the sequence between the NBA 2020 finals which ended on October 12 and the resumption of training six weeks later.
“I almost played two seasons in a year, with the break and everything that followed, then the bubble, and finally having only a month or so to prepare after a title and replay every two days. It was seen for us, we had a lot of injuries ”, he added. “But despite the injuries, the pandemic, no matter what, I always had this positive mindset throughout the year, about our team because I really believed in our abilities, I really believed we were going to win the title again this year. It’s hard “.
First supporter of his twin brother, engaged with the Clippers, Markieff Morris will now take the time to cut for good. “I think in order for me to reset myself, I have to go somewhere, switch off my phone and really just take a step back”, he concluded.
