EM 2021: Germany should rather be second in Group F! – Soccer

Thanks to the 4-2 gala against Portugal we have everything in our own hands again!

At least one point has to be made against Hungary tomorrow so that the dream of the fourth European title can live on. Jogi’s boys before moving into the knockout phase – and we tremble in front of the TV. Hopefully we will come through as second! Why would that be cheaper than the first group place?

We might face an “easier” opponent in the round of 16, but the toughest chunk threatens earlier. Italy already in the semi-finals! As runners-up in the group, we would only meet the invincible (30 games without defeat) in the final.

And: As runners-up in the group, the stadiums where we love to win titles beckon us! Three times Wembley and Rome – there was something …

► Round of 16 in London. Possibly against England! Here we celebrated our last European Championship title in 1996! Oliver Bierhoff (53) scored the historically unique Golden Goal to 2-1 in the final against the Czech Republic. The rule (end of game with the decisive goal) was later abolished.

► The quarter-finals would go to Rome. In the Stadio Olimpico, Horst Hrubesch (70) shot Germany in 1980 with a double in the final against Belgium (2-1) to win the European Championship. And Andy Brehme (60) even made us world champions ten years later in Rome with his winning goal against Argentina (1-0).

Possible opponents there: the winner of Spain group E or one of the best third-placed.

The semifinals and finals will take place again in Wembley – as long as the corona situation in Great Britain is under control.

Jogi, we like this route best!

For comparison: as group winners we would have to go to Bucharest in the round of 16, then on to St. Petersburg. We are happy to leave the trips to the French as winners of our Group F.

What if we only become third in the group?

Then it would be the toughest semifinals in sporting terms. With Holland and Belgium two title candidates would be waiting for us as possible opponents in the round of 16. We like the London-Rome-London route a lot better …
