EM 2021: Dutch fans put their neighbors in

European Championship game of the Netherlands
Football broadcast with a 20 second lead: Orange fans put their neighbors in

Everyone is watching the same game, but not at the same speed: some transmission signals arrive faster than others. Dutch fans used this for a little joke.

Almost the whole country is back in front of the TV for the European Football Championship. Not all fans are informed about what is happening at the same time: There are sometimes considerable time differences between the individual transmission channels. Those who watch satellite television are quickest, cable users and viewers of streams on the Internet are already more than four seconds behind, according to the result of a test by “heise.de”.

So it happens that some can cheer earlier than others. Of course, that removes the tension – and that’s not the only reason why it sometimes leads to trouble. If you are a few seconds ahead of the others with your signal, you can play a mean trick on your neighbors. Some football fans from the Netherlands have taken advantage of this, and their video is currently making the rounds on the Internet.

When the neighbors cheer earlier

At the European Championship group game between the Netherlands and Austria, the group of young men watched the game on one of the upper floors, while other fans watched the game on a screen in the garden below. The men in the house followed the broadcast with a good 20 seconds lead – and used that to trick their neighbors.

They waited for a goal chance for the Dutch team – and it came when striker Memphis Depay got the ball free after a pass from Wout Weghorst. Depay shot over the box from a short distance, but the men broke out into loud cheers, which could also be heard downstairs in the garden. There, the other fan group joined in with the cheers as a precaution, and even then, when the scene was on their screen, hardly realized that no goal had been scored for their team.

In the end, everyone was reconciled

The little joke was a success, the fans were very amused about it and posted the video of evidence on Instagram. Millions of users have now seen the clip on social networks. Most find him funny, even if many admit that if they had been the victim of such an action, they would have been quite angry.

After the final whistle, everyone should have been reconciled: The Dutch national team beat Austria 2-0 and advanced to the second round of the European Championship with their second group win.
