Arrived in New York in early February, as a replacement, Derrick Rose will have finished the season in the five major, taking the place of Elfrid Payton from Game 3 against the Hawks. With 19.4 points, 5 assists and 4 rebounds on average in the playoffs, the former Chicago star had a good streak despite the elimination of the Knicks in five games, after finishing third in the votes for best sixth man of the regular season.
This return to New York is therefore a success for the MVP 2011. This logically guides his choice for the future while he is “free agent” this summer.
“You know how it works, it’s not up to me”, he assures. “It’s up to the leaders to decide. They have big goals. Who knows if I will come back or not? I do not know. I’ll talk to my agent about it. Nevertheless, I would love to stay. Who wouldn’t want to play for the Knicks or be in New York? “
The Knicks will have several files to manage during this offseason, in addition of course to spending their money on a possible big “free agent”, because several players, besides Derrick Rose, are coming to the end of their contract: Alec Burks, Elfrid Payton, Nerlens Noel or Reggie Bullock. We will have to make the right decisions to surround Julius Randle and RJ Barrett at best, if the franchise wants to return to the playoffs in 2022.
“This is one of the reasons why I want to come back here: the hard core is good”, he continues. “Who wouldn’t want, for a player my age, to be with this little group of young talent and build something? “
There is no doubt that with his performances, his experience and his special relationship with Tom Thibodeau, there is a good chance of seeing “D-Rose”, who will be 33 years old next October, with the Knicks next season.
Preferably in a role of 6th man, once the position of leader has stabilized by recruitment? There are experienced leaders to recover since Mike Conley, Kyle Lowry, Dennis Schröder and Lonzo Ball will be on the market, as will undoubtedly Goran Dragic and Spencer Dinwiddie.
